A Cape Town woman has lost her life after her home was destroyed by a fire. The 65-year-old woman was reportedly wheelchair-bound and was discovered in the early hours of Tuesday morning in her Bellville home as her family helplessly watched on.
City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue were on the scene in minutes with crews from Bellville and Brackenfell attempting to tackle the flames.
“Firefighters were confronted with a dwelling alight and reports of someone being inside the dwelling,” indicated City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson Jermaine Carelse.
Despite extensive damage to the home, the woman’s husband, daughter, and her children had all escaped the fire unharmed, reports News24.
According to reports, the pensioner’s husband had been watering the garden around 06:00 am when he noticed the flames coming from their bedroom. Unfortunately, the bedridden woman was unable to escape the flames, with firefighters needing to use two points of entry to get into the house and reach the already deceased woman.
It is still unclear what started the fire.
