From the beginning of February 2018, you will be paying R30 more to renew your motor vehicle license – the handling fee has been increased.

In an interview with Cape Talk, Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) spokesperson Simon Zwane said that the handling renewal has been bumped up from R42.

Motor vehicle owners are now expected to pay a renewal handling fee of R72.

Zwane says the massive increase is due to the fact that the fees was never increased each year as initially planned. The fees, initiated in 2007, was supposed to see a R6 increase each year.

However, this only happened in 2009 (R30 to R36) and 2016 (to R42).

“In all that time, the costs of running the eNaTIS system has gone up. Personnel costs have gone up,” Zwane told the radio station.

Zwane added that the fees could have been more than R100 “but consideration was taken to account that already people are having it hard.”
