On Monday, the NSRI Simon’s Town duty crew was activated to assist Cape Medical Response (CMR) with ongoing CPR efforts on a 9-year-old boy who had been rescued from a drowning incident at the Glencairn Beach tidal pool, Cape {town] Etc reports.
According to a media release, the NSRI Simon’s Town rescue vehicle and additional NSRI Simon’s Town crew were dispatched, and WC Government Health EMS Metro Control was alerted.
It has been reported that, upon arrival at the scene, two male children, believed to be part of a small local school excursion to the beach with teachers, carers and an NGO, were rescued from the tidal pool by members of the group.
Two Australian doctors, suspected to be part of the NGO, had performed CPR on one of the children, successfully restoring a pulse and spontaneous breathing, though the child remained in critical condition.
The second child was in a stable condition and was taken into the care of CMR paramedics.
CMR paramedics assisted the two doctors with medical treatment for the children.
The EMS/AMS Skymed rescue helicopter was activated by EMS Metro Control and the 9-year-old child was airlifted to hospital in the care of paramedics in a critical condition.
The second child was transported to the hospital by CMR ambulance in a serious but stable condition.
Details surrounding the incident, including the involvement of a local school, the NGO and the two doctors, are not clear.
Reportedly, the 9-year-old child remains in a critical condition in the care of doctors and nurses in hospital but is believed to be stable.
