The world and the media went wild after Will Smith slapped Chris Rock at this years Oscars. A public apology was issued, Rock said he’ll make a comedy out if it, Smith was banned from the prestigious ceremony for a decade, and now, a final statement.
Regarding his ban, the Academy said in an open letter: “Today, the Board of Governors convened a meeting to discuss how best to respond to Will Smith’s actions at the Oscars, in addition to accepting his resignation.
“The Board has decided, for a period of 10 years from April 8, 2022, Mr. Smith shall not be permitted to attend any Academy events or programs, in person or virtually, including but not limited to the Academy Awards.”
Despite resigning from the Academy, Smith didn’t beat it to the punch. In response to his ten year ban, he said: “I accept and respect the Academy’s decision.”
Smith might “respect” the decision, but many have expressed their disrespect for him and his behaviour. The A-list star certainly dropped a few letters down the alphabet, along with the number of his social media followers — he lost a few million Instagram followers after losing his temper. Yes, Will, violence certainly is “poisonous and destructive,” as he wrote in his initial apology.
Smith might have released his final statement, but it’s fair to say — that without saying much — the final word has gone to Chris Rock. We’ll be waiting patiently for his next comedy set.
