Cape Town’s enforcement agencies reported a bustling week that saw the arrest of 281 suspects and the issuance of 59 682 fines, reports Cape {town} Etc.
On Sunday, 19 October, metro police officers made a pivotal stop on the elevated freeway, where they pulled over an overloaded VW Polo.
Their observations led to the recovery of a card machine and a 9mm pistol and, ultimately, the apprehension of six individuals – four males and two females, aged between 29 and 35. The driver also faced charges for driving under the influence of alcohol.
Additionally, just a day prior, on Saturday, 18 October, authorities arrested a 37-year-old man in Arthur Road, Sea Point, after discovering cocaine valued at an estimated R40 000 in his possession. The arrest is part of ongoing efforts to tackle substance abuse and drug trafficking in the region.
The week saw another significant arrest on Friday, 17 October, when law enforcement officers detained a 24-year-old suspect for possessing a prohibited firearm in Tafelsig.

This arrest was part of a larger total of 133 arrests made by law enforcement officers alone during that week, which also included the issuance of 6 293 fines.
Among the metro police’s efforts, 109 suspects were arrested, with 23 of these individuals charged specifically for driving under the influence of alcohol.
On the road, traffic officers reported 39 arrests, predominantly for alcohol-related offences, but also for reckless driving and various other traffic violations.
Traffic enforcement measures yielded the issuance of 50 540 fines and the execution of 1 769 warrants of arrest, alongside 225 public transport vehicles being impounded for various infractions.
Alderman JP Smith, the mayoral committee member for Safety and Security, expressed gratitude for the diligence and observational acumen demonstrated by the enforcement teams.
He stated, ‘Many of our operational successes are the result of dedicated proactive patrols and sharp observational skills of our staff on the ground. The arrest of six suspects near the CBD on the weekend is a good example – it started with officers being observant and spotting that the vehicle was overloaded. One can only hope that their hard work is complemented by the investigation into this and the hundreds of other arrests made so that meaningful convictions can be achieved.’
He urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any criminal activity or suspicious behaviour to the City’s Public Emergency Communication Centre at 021 480 7700, further galvanising community involvement in the fight against crime.
