Capetonians have always known that Cape Town is one of the best cities in the world. After a gruelling pandemic and endless travel restrictions, it looks like the world has finally caught on. #CapeTown is going viral on social media and we’re not surprised.
Two years of lockdowns and pandemic-induced cabin fever has seen international travel come back with a vengeance. Tourists are packing their bags and purchasing their sunnies for a chance to soak up the glorious African sunshine and take a dip in the icy blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean.
And who could blame them? A few months of not being able to leave our homes during hard lockdown has proved that Capetonians can’t do without a fresh ocean breeze. Since January, the Mother City has seen a 20% increase in foreign visitors.
Various air carriers have resumed flights and American airlines such as Delta are trying to get in on the action by adding a few more flights stopping in Cape Town to their itineraries.
A recent article by the Telegraph is shining a light on why Cape Town is the golden child of South Africa, offering amazing suggestions on where international tourists are eating, staying, and playing. If you’re like us and you’re keen on playing tourist in your own city, here are a few of the exciting inclusions.
Where to stay
Earlier this year, the Winchester Hotel opened its doors once again, sporting a R90 million renovation. The iconic hotel has been featured as the place to stay thanks to its history, incredible decor, and delicious food. Its restaurant – Shoreditch House – has been winning over tastebuds and is a great stop for those looking for a flavourful meal that’s coupled with gorgeous seaside views.
The Marly, in the heart of Camps Bay, the always excellent 12 Apostles, and the seven-suite city hotel Labotessa, were all inclusions on the list.
Where to eat
The foodie scene in Cape Town is unbelievable. It can be difficult to choose just one restaurant, but the online publication has narrowed it down for us. If you’re hungry for some good food and good vibes check out Tomson in Bree Street. If you’re looking to enjoy a delicious meal with a side of suburban bliss, make sure you visit Homespun at the Andros in Claremont. The V&A Waterfront is another gem bursting with some goodies, including Pier. Cabo Beach Club and The Royal Oyster Bar also make the list.
Things to do
The Cape Winelands is a magical paradise filled with rolling vineyards, rugged mountains and magnificent wines — what more could you ask for? While the city centre has always attracted tourists, it’s the Cape Winelands region that will win their hearts. A relaxing escape from the city comes in the form of Brookdale Estate, a 165-acre estate that offers gorgeous views and a wonderful modern Cape Dutch-style home.
The luxurious Delaire Graff wine estate is another golden nugget included on the list, along with the always popular Boschendal. As for the beach? Surfing Muizenberg (wetsuit regarded) was also mentioned.
So, what are you waiting for? Let’s start exploring!
