South Africa’s matric Class of 2025 has a new standout star, with Abigail Kok emerging as the country’s top-performing learner after an exceptional set of National Senior Certificate results.
The York High School pupil from George in the Western Cape achieved the highest overall marks nationally, while also finishing as the country’s top candidate in Physical Sciences, cementing her place at the top of the 2025 matric rankings, as revealed by Smile FM.
Kok’s achievement was confirmed when the Department of Basic Education released the national results, drawing widespread praise from education officials, teachers and fellow pupils. Her success also continued the Western Cape’s strong recent trend, with the province once again producing the country’s top achiever.
Speaking after the announcement, Kok described the moment as overwhelming and surreal, saying the recognition had not fully sunk in yet. She credited consistency, balance and disciplined study habits for her success, rather than last-minute cramming.

Educators at York High School praised her calm approach to academics, noting that she remained focused throughout the year while also managing the pressure that comes with high expectations. Teachers described her as driven, curious and quietly confident, particularly in science subjects.
Kok’s outstanding Physical Sciences result placed her above thousands of candidates nationwide, highlighting both her technical ability and deep understanding of complex concepts. Her performance has drawn attention from universities across the country as she prepares to take the next step in her academic journey.
Her achievement comes during a year in which more than one million South African pupils wrote the matric examinations, making her accomplishment all the more remarkable given the scale and competitiveness of the process.
As celebrations continue, Kok has become a source of inspiration for learners across the country, proving that dedication and steady effort can deliver exceptional results. For now, South Africa’s top matriculant is taking time to reflect on a year that has ended with her name written into the country’s education history.
