On Friday, 7 February 2025, the NPA confirmed the identity of the accused who had been charged with culpable homicide and driving under the influence. The revelation came after the accused’s first court appearance on Thursday, 6 February 2025, Cape {town} Etc reports.
Dr Mdlokolo was a 32-year-old dental surgeon originally from Durban.
She had been walking with her sister, Anelisa Mdlokolo, on Buitengracht Street in Cape Town during the early hours of Saturday, 31 January 2025, when she was hit by the red Ferrari.
Dr Mdlokolo was declared dead at the scene whilst another pedestrian had been injured.
David Polet, a 36-year-old man, was accused in court for the death of Dr Ncumisa Mdlokolo after driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the fatal crash.
Prior to the court appearance, the driver’s identity had not been revealed to the public, as SAPS commented ‘be advised that this office is not at liberty to disclose the identity of a complainant, hospital, shopping mall or a suspect or divulge the reason why he or she approached or are involved in, SAPS confidentially with a police related matter.’
SAPS’ decision to withhold the suspect’s name, despite public interest in the matter, stemmed from various legal and procedural reasons.
According to SwisherPost, Polet will once again appear in court on 7 May 2025.
