The greater Goodwood area will be getting six more CCTV cameras in the high-crime areas after the district has been struggling with metal and steel theft, destruction of rail infrastructure and business robberies.
According to IOL, Goodwood currently has 17 cameras, while Metro Police Department spokesperson, Ruth Solomons confirmed that the R5 million project will run from 1 July 2022 until 30 June 2023. The cameras will be monitored by the City.
The department is currently waiting for confirmation on the equipment rates, reports Ghana News. The cost of civil works for fibre installations, equipment in the control centre to view cameras, and recording equipment to review footage also had to be factored in.
Crime has escalated to the point where a business robbery recently became a hostage situation at a local supermarket in Goodwood.
According to police spokesperson Colonel Andrè Traut, the vigilance of the public and the swift response by police led to the arrest on Wednesday morning, 12 January.
It was reported that the armed suspects held the owners of a shop situated in Voortrekker Road at gunpoint. One of the suspects fled when they were disturbed by someone who made alarm, but was apprehended by the public. SAPS members attached to Goodwood police arrived on the scene and arrested the second suspect.
Rolling out additional cameras would extend the coverage in the area and assist with robberies, illegal gatherings, and smash and grabs.
