A 36-year-old man, believed to be the alleged Fancy Boys gang leader ‘Pang’, was shot and killed in Kalksteenfontein on Thursday afternoon, Cape {town} Etc reports.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the shooting took place at around 2:25pm on a bridge near the corner of Jakkalsvlei Avenue and Valhalla Drive.
Police spokesperson Captain Frederick Van Wyk confirmed that the victim sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was declared dead at the scene. A second man, aged 30, was injured in the incident after being shot in the face, arm and hand.
Preliminary reports indicate that the two men were travelling from Bonteheuwel towards Kalksteenfontein when a blue Audi approached and opened fire.
‘As they were driving, a blue Audi vehicle passed, and the occupants randomly started shooting at them,’ Van Wyk said, adding that the vehicle’s registration number remains unknown.
The injured victim was privately transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
Authorities have opened cases of murder and attempted murder, with the motive still under investigation.
While police have not officially confirmed the victim’s identity and said that the motive ‘forms part of the police investigation’, the incident is understood to be linked to ongoing gang-related violence in the surrounding areas.
Fears of retaliatory violence are subsequently mounting within the community – a fear subcouncil chairperson Angus McKenzie said the authorities are taking seriously.
‘This development raises serious concern about the potential for retaliatory violence. In response, we have already engaged and briefed the relevant safety and security agencies operating in the area, including the SANDF, to ensure heightened vigilance and visible presence where necessary,’ McKenzie said in a post on Facebook.
‘We will be monitoring the situation closely and remain in constant communication with law enforcement and security partners to ensure swift and coordinated action.’
Residents familiar with gang activity in the area expressed to News24 that there would soon be retaliation.
‘Many members of the Americans and the Inglourious Basterds joined the Fancy Boys, and Pang was believed to be responsible for recruiting them,’ the publication quoted a resident as saying.
‘His death weakens the Fancy Boys, and gangs like the Hard Livings and Ghetto Kids may try to move in on their territory.’
Police have urged anyone with information to come forward.
‘Anyone with information about this shooting incident is kindly requested to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111,’ Van Wyk concluded.
