Residents are urged to stay alert today due to a high risk of violence and potential shootings surrounding the memorial service for Essey, the alleged gang leader of the Junky Funky Kids (JFK) gang.
Specific areas of concern include M5 Prince George Drive, Lavender Hill, Seawinds and Van de Leer Hof, where tensions may escalate.
Authorities have requested an increased visibility of the South African Police Service (SAPS) and law enforcement in these locations.

A 42-year-old male was gunned down in the parking lot of Brackenfell police station on Thursday morning, 30 January 2025, reports Cape {town} Etc.
According to police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi, the fatal shooting took place at around 9:45am.
‘Reports suggested that at about 9:45am, unknown gunmen opened fire near a parking area on Brackenfell Boulevard after the man left his Opel LDV and walked in the direction of Brackenfell SAPS offices,’ said Swartbooi.
‘The man did not survive this onslaught on his life and was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel. The unknown suspects fled the scene and are yet to be arrested.’
The victim, who sustained fatal injuries due to multiple gunshots, is believed to be Essey, the alleged gang leader of the Junky Funky Kids (JFK) gang.

While the motive for the attack remains unclear, Swartbooi said detectives attached to the Anti-Gang Unit are hard at work pursuing leads in a bid to apprehend the suspects responsible and Brackenfell police have opened a murder case.
‘Any person who can shed light on the circumstances of this incident is kindly requested to call Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or, alternatively, use the mobile app MySAPS anonymously.’
As per Coniston Park Neighbourhood Watch’s safety advisory, residents and motorists are advised to avoid Prince George Drive, as well as Steenberg and Lavender Hill as much as possible. These are areas where subsequent tensions may be heightened.
‘In light of this incident, there is a strong possibility of retaliation, making the situation in our surrounding areas highly volatile,’ the neighbourhood watch chairperson Keegan N Ford warned.
‘Please remain vigilant, be aware of your surroundings, and take extra precautions when traveling,’ said Ford, adding that the neighbourhood watch will continue to monitor the situation.
Ward 45 Councillor Mandy Marr also confirmed that City of Cape Town’s Law Enforcement Advancement Programme (LEAP) will be deploying multiple resources to Seawinds, Hillview, Vrygrond, Lavender Hill and surrounds to assist during this period of instability.
‘They will be coordinating with SAPS in responding to the anticipated challenging time ahead,’ added Marr.
