Cape Town police are launching an investigation after a man was found dead in the water near Table Bay Harbour on Thursday morning, while a young child was rushed to hospital for treatment, reports Cape {town} Etc.
‘Table Bay Harbour police registered an inquest for investigation after the body of an adult male was retrieved from the water on Thursday morning, 4 December 2025,’ confirmed police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg.
‘The victim was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel.’
A child, believed to be between the ages of five and ten, was also retrieved from the water and taken to a medical facility for treatment while divers continued searching for the man.
According to NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon, the child was found ‘in the care of Good Samaritan bystanders’ when NSRI rescue swimmers arrived on scene. The young boy was transported to hospital ‘in a stable condition’.
‘During free dive search efforts, an NSRI rescue swimmer located and secured the body of the adult male in the water that was recovered from the water onto a police WPDS boat by police divers, assisted by NSRI rescue swimmers, and the body was brought ashore,’ added Lambinon.
While the circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation, social media reports indicated that the adult male jumped into the water with his child and that the incident appeared to be a suicide attempt.
Twigg did not corroborate the link between the two victims, but confirmed that they were spotted in the water at the Port of Table Bay, Duncan Docks.
‘Anyone with any information about this incident can contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or use the mobile application MySAPS anonymously,’ concluded Twigg.
The fatal incident comes after a man threw himself in front of an approaching train at Wynberg train station earlier this week.
