Mbandazayo was in charge of an investigation into companies who did business with the municipality after CoCT official Wendy Kloppers was shot and killed at the Symphony Way Housing Project building site.
At the time, he said her death was the result of the City’s refusal to succumb to the demands of gangsters seeking work from contractors at the housing project.
Several companies owned by Nicole Johnson, the wife of alleged 28s gang boss Ralph Stanfield, were blacklisted during the time of the investigation.
‘He (Mbandazayo) is causing a major aggravation to the persons whose companies are being blacklisted and if he succeeds, which he is, it will embolden local authorities to act similarly and that must be a cause of concern for these syndicates,’ the City’s Mayco member for security and safety JP Smith told Daily Maverick in April.
Sources in the municipality told Daily Maverick that Mbandazayo has a security convoy of motorbikes, SUVs and law enforcement officers.
He allegedly wears a bulletproof vest and his armed security carries rifles.
On Friday night, a VW Polo T-Cross and a Mercedes Benz were stopped and searched on Ringwood Drive, just metres away from Mbandazayo’s home in Table View.
Police reportedly told Daily Voice that the suspects, who were arrested, were there for a suspected ‘gang retaliation attack’. One of the suspects was shot last week.
Police confiscated an AK-47 rifle with 28 rounds of ammunition as well as an Uzi semi-automatic gun with 25 rounds of ammunition.
