A Table View High School learner was suspended while three other pupils face a disciplinary hearing after a brawl allegedly broke out over a packet of chips.
The video was shared across social media platforms, and shows how one pupil is thrown onto the tar. The pupil tries to shield his head to block the repeated blows while his mask also comes loose.
According to IOL, the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) spokesperson, Bronagh Hammond said the incident took place last week Thursday, July 29 allegedly over a packet of chips, adding that another learner tried to break up the fight but was assaulted.
“A second altercation happened after the school had been dismissed, which was caught on camera. The altercation happened between the learner who originally intervened and another learner who had been in the altercation earlier that day,” said Hammond.
It is reported that the three learners would face a disciplinary hearing.
“The alleged victim in the video is not facing disciplinary action, but has been called as a witness. The other learner in the video has been temporarily suspended,” Hammond said as per News24.
A mediation meeting was conducted whereby the pupils have apologised for their role in the incidents which took place while the school is also dealing with the fight in terms of its disciplinary process. Trauma counselling has been arranged for the learners, she adds.
Meanwhile, ANC provincial spokesperson on education, Khalid Sayed mentioned that he was disgusted by these bullying tactics, while describing this as a “serious matter, and the suspects must be disciplined properly, as IOL reports.
He further commended the high school for quickly taking the necessary steps to send out a powerful message against bullying.
