The ANC in the Western Cape has stated that they will be heading to the police to open a case against suspended community safety MEC Albert Fritz.
The news comes after Western Cape Premier Alan Winde broke his silence on the immediate suspension of Fritz, revealing that the MEC had been accused of sexual assault by young employees who had worked in his office, stepping forward to detail allegations that date back to last year.
Four other senior officials have also been suspended for their involvement in the alleged scandal, as per eNCA.
Following the revelation, the ANC has urged Winde to completely remove Fritz from the executive and provide law enforcement with the opportunity and room to deal with these serious allegations, reports IOL.
ANC’s provincial spokesperson Sifiso Mtsweni has shared his thoughts on the matter, revealing that he was most disturbed by the fact that Fritz was awarded the role of protecting the communities in the Western Cape and creating a safe environment for the women and children of the province, however, he has chosen to take on the role of alleged sexual perpetrator within the workplace, exchanging work for favours.
“The Premier of the province, who has sat on this information for some time in his quest to manage internal dynamics within the DA, has today arrogated himself the role of being an investigator, prosecutor and judge.
“The revelations that are coming forward through victims of Mr Fritz’s heinous crimes paint a grim picture of GBV and sexual offences which are of a criminal nature. Instead of Winde strictly adhering to the principles of the rule of law by ensuring that appropriate law enforcement agencies deal with this matter, he continues to recklessly undermine the efforts to fight GBV through managing internal politics in the DA,” Mtsweni stated.
He concluded that the party would be approaching the police to open a case, with Mtsweni calling on the provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Thembisile Patekile to ensure that this case gets the required attention.
