This was emphasised by ANC Deputy Secretary-General Nomvula Mokonyane during a press briefing following the party’s recent international relations retreat in Kempton Park, Ekurhuleni.
As Americans prepare to vote in a contest between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump, Mokonyane remarked that South Africa’s relationship with the US is driven by national interests rather than the political party in power. She expressed hope for a democratic outcome in the US elections.
Mokonyane stated, ‘We will engage with the elected leader because it is crucial for us to maintain relations that benefit our national interests, promote inclusive growth, combat poverty, and create better economic opportunities for marginalised groups.’
She stressed the importance of allowing Americans to decide their leader through the electoral process, reiterating that South Africa’s foreign policy towards the US is based on its own national interests.
Regarding elections in neighbouring countries like Botswana and Mozambique, Mokonyane highlighted the need for stability and order. She noted that opposition parties in Mozambique contested the results of the recent elections, claiming they were fraudulent, which led to protests and violence.
Mokonyane expressed the ANC’s commitment to working with Frelimo to address the unrest in Mozambique, emphasising that regional organisations should assist in restoring peace and stability.
She also commented on the recent elections in Botswana, where the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) replaced the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) after 58 years in power. Mokonyane acknowledged the former president’s concession of defeat and the smooth transition to UDC leader Duma Boko, who was inaugurated as Botswana’s president.
She noted that this electoral outcome reflects the will of the people and should be respected, similar to the recent electoral changes in South Africa. Mokonyane encouraged reflection on the lessons learned from the election results and emphasised the importance of looking forward.
News24 first reported that plans for a collaboration with liberation movements were discussed, with upcoming meetings for secretaries-general and presidents of these movements. The ANC’s international relations subcommittee will review the retreat’s outcomes to influence the party’s future actions.
Some key outcomes from the retreat include:
- Enhancing South Africa’s involvement in continental organisations like SADC and the African Union.
- Promoting the ANC’s role in the African Agenda through partnerships with both established and emerging political parties and civil society.
- Strengthening movements for women, youth, and other sectors to ensure they contribute effectively to African development.
