Members of the Animal Rescue Organisation (ARO) experienced a harrowing assault and robbery while conducting their routine community veterinary outreach near the Siyahlala Clinic in Philippi, reports Cape {town} Etc.
The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, has left staff members shaken but grateful for their safety.
ARO spokesperson Lindsey Concer described how the team, part of Mobile Clinic 1, was surrounded by approximately nine men as they conducted their work at the clinic. ‘They trapped us with no safe way to leave, and the attackers began to physically assault us,’ Concer recounted.
The staff members endured arm twisting, repeated strikes, and were ultimately pressured with the frightening prospect of being forced into their mobile clinic vehicle.
In a remarkable display of courage, the ARO team fought back against the assailants, thwarting their intent of being moved to a secondary location.

While they emerged physically safe, the emotional toll of the attack is profound. ‘Although we are bruised and concussed, we are relieved that our staff are physically secure,’ Concer remarked, acknowledging the traumatic experience.
During the chaos, the criminals stole personal belongings, including cellphones and driver’s licences, further complicating the aftermath for the team.
In reaction to this shocking incident, ARO has made the difficult decision to ground their Mobile Clinics for the remainder of the year, citing a historical uptick in violent crime during December. ‘This is not a decision we take lightly,’ Concer explained.
‘We understand how many families and pets rely on our mobile services every week. While we know this will create hardships for those who depend on affordable veterinary care, the safety of our team and the communities we serve has always been our priority,’
As the Festive Season approaches, ARO encourages pet owners in need of veterinary services to visit their full-service clinic at Ottery, located at 5 Olieboom Road, or contact local animal welfare organisations for assistance.
‘We are incredibly proud of our team’s bravery during this incident and what happened was unacceptable, frightening and heartbreaking, especially for a team that shows up every single day to support animals and families in underserved communities,’ Concer stated.
