Update:
Following an enquiry made by community group Baboons Of The South, the Cape Peninsula Baboon Management Joint Task Team (CPMJTT) confirmed that Earl the baboon has been euthanised, reports Cape {town} Etc.
‘The dispersing male baboon (TK67) failed to integrate with any of the available Northern subpopulation troops after a previous capture and return to his natal range and remained lingering in Constantia for months,’ said the CPBMJTT.
‘TK67 has been euthanised following deliberation by the Cape Peninsula Baboon Management Joint Task Team.’
Earl was the name given to the male baboon who was discovered taking a walkabout through Plumstead, Kenwyn and Lansdowne in the southern suburbs just under two weeks ago.
Earl was safely captured in Lansdowne by the Animal Welfare Society of SA, along with the Cape of Good Hope SPCA, NCC and vets on 20 August.
In its statement, Baboons Of The South subsequently called on the Joint Task Team for openness and transparency regarding updates on the Cape’s baboons, expressing that the current guidelines need to change.
‘This update has a clear and constructive purpose behind it,’ says the group.
‘It is a call to the Joint Task Team to be open, transparent and to communicate about our baboons rather than the public having to ask which leads to anger and frustration, justifiably so.’
The group also called for a Baboon Portal of information ‘which should provide updated and pertinent information to the public’.
‘It is an effort to try and build trust and bring some peace to our baboons and baboon management,’ the group added.
