Road closures were put in place when a protest sprung up between the R300 and Borcherds Quarry road last night. A bus was set alight as well as a police vehicle.

“Bus has been burned, cars, trucks, buses have turned around and travelling back towards Somerset West using the incoming lane, driving into oncoming traffic,” the City of Cape Town said in a statement.

It is reported that the Western Cape government confirmed that two people died during a multiple-vehicle crash on the corner of Lansdowne and Symphony Way earlier this morning. An Opel Astra, Quantum, and VW panel van collided in an attempt to escape the violence that erupted from the protest.

This is the second bus to be razed during protests this week – a Golden Arrow bus was set alight early on Monday morning. The City’s Fire and Rescue Services responded to the blaze.

Stock Road between Rochester and Govan Mbeki were temporarily closed as a result, and drivers were urged to use alternative routes.
