While in his car in Gardens on the morning of Wednesday, February 12, a civil attorney was shot and wounded when a vehicle pulled up beside him and fired two shots.

The attorney, Jakes van der Merwe, was wounded in the neck but he is reportedly recovering from the incident.

Van der Merwe was driving a Toyota Land Cruiser when one of the bullets successfully went through the window on the driver’s side and another hit the metal panel between the driver and passenger windows.

Residents in the area reported hearing a loud bang when the incident occurred.

“The circumstances surrounding an attempted murder are being investigated following an incident in Constantia Road, Higgovale yesterday morning [Wednesday, February 12]. At around 7.50am, unknown suspects fired shots at a 53-year-old man who was sitting in his vehicle. The victim was admitted to hospital for the treatment of a gunshot wound. The suspects fled the scene and are yet to be arrested,” said Colonel Andrè Traut from Western Cape South African Police Services (SAPS).
This incident comes after the murder of attorney Noorudien Hassan, who was also gunned down in his car in Lansdowne in 2016, and advocate Pete Mihalik who was killed while in his vehicle in Green Point in 2018.
