Residents of Manenberg on the Cape Flats are concerned about the ongoing gang violence after a 10-year boy was shot and killed.
According to police spokesperson Andre Traut, the young boy was caught in a crossfire between two rival gangs in the area. Traut says the incident took place on the corners of Priscilla Ngeni and Chemist Mlungu Streets in Tambo Village.
“It is believed that five unknown suspects fired randomly at each other and that the victim was caught in the crossfire of these rival gangs. He was admitted to hospital where he later succumbed,” Traut said.
Traut further mentioned that no arrests have been made yet, but Manenberg detectives are investigating the incident.
“The City’s Gang Unit and the SAPS Anti-Gang Unit are conducting major operations in the Ottery area to deal with the flare-up of violence. The Department of Community Safety is also furthermore monitoring the situation closely and is ready to deploy LEAP Officers to affected areas if needs be,” Fritz said.
