Eleven members of the Western Cape Anti-Gang Unit (AGU) are set to appear in the Athlone Magistrates’ Court for the alleged murder of a Manenberg man today, reports Cape {town} Etc.
According to News24, the charges include murder, kidnapping, torture and assault following the death of a man, identified in court documents as Wade Price.
Police records show that the accused face one murder charge, four counts of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, four counts of kidnapping and one count of torture.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) confirmed detectives arrested the Anti-Gang Unit (AGU) officers after he collapsed and later died during an interrogation linked to a shooting near the Athlone court (Smile 90.4FM).
Lizzy Suping, an IPID spokesperson, said: ‘The deceased’s cause of death was as a result of unnatural causes.’ She added that the directorate will disclose further findings when the trial begins.
Family members told reporters they last saw Price at a small gathering before police took him and others for questioning. Emergency services removed him from a property in Manenberg and he was later pronounced dead at hospital.
Three accused return to court for a formal bail hearing today. The remaining eight are due for bail proceedings later this week.
All are being held at Bellville Police Station pending the hearings.
