A group of people are demanding to be referred to as ‘pure bloods’ and it’s not because they’re a part of the Malfoy family from the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.
Recently, TikTok has seen the term #purebloods and #antivaxxers sharing the same space as people took to the social media platform to share their preferred terminology for their unvaccinated status.
One user alleged that he saw the invitation for retitling as per a video posted by a masked individual. This is allegedly where the cult-esque categorisation began.

Very quickly, people began using the hashtags #pureblood and #antivaxxer alongside somewhat eerie sounds to proclaim their ‘status’. The videos attracted thousands of likes.

However, many users were quick to ask whether the ‘pure bloods’ were aware that the term had already been dubbed, and that the ending wasn’t necessarily happy in the Harry Potter World for the pure blood supremacists.
For a quick Harry Potter refresher, a pure blood refers to witches and wizards who are of a pure magical ancestral bloodline. A half-blooded pertains to a witch or wizard mixed between muggle and magical ancestry, a mud blood is a one who is magical but born of muggle parents, and a muggle is a non-magical being.
Throughout J. K. Rowling’s works, we see a sort of classist and supremacist divide by those who believe that pure bloods are superior. Pure blood superiority was largely Voldemort’s agenda, and Voldemort was a little out of reach when it came to most people’s favourite character, to put it politely.
Essentially, Rowling drew on factionalism, as well as notions toward ‘racial’ or ‘cultural’ cleansing, and the problems attested to the former. She also drew on classist power and the like. Essentially, the characters who were proponents of the former points were not portrayed well.
Even though the Wizarding World is fictional (allegedly), the messages from J. K. Rowling’s books highlighted the problems with supremacism, so the term ‘pure blood’ in the integration of the real world, is far from tasteful.

Everyone has the right to choose their vaccination status of course, but that’s just it. Everyone. Which means you can’t be ‘pure’ if you don’t get the vaccine, because that would take away from the equality of choice, at least in my opinion writes Cape {town} Etc’s Ashleigh Nefdt.
