The City of Cape Town is appealing to the public for help in assisting people in Athlone, after a devastating fire wrecked havoc on Sunday night [February 14], leaving hundreds displaced and one dead.

A fire broke out at the Hadji Ebrahim informal settlement in Belgravia, Athlone and destroyed 31 wood and iron structures, leaving 123 people displaced. One adult male tragically died. The circumstances surrounding the incident are currently being investigated.

City officials, including disaster management teams, were deployed to the scene to assist the victims.

The City appeals to members of the public to assist victims with social relief in the form of food parcels, blankets, baby packs, clothing and building material.
