If jumping to conclusions was a sport, some of us would receive shiny gold medals. And this was seen after Capetonians started panicking (and some even laughing) when images of informal settlements started to surface on social media.
One Facebook user said “The way it was so hot, people are moving close to the beach. Macassar Beach”, along with some images of informal housing nestled on the golden sand.
It was clearly very believable to some, especially after the recent heatwave this past weekend where thousands flocked to the beaches to beat the heat and cool down.
One person responded to the post with humour by saying: “Beach front houses are far to expensive”, while the images spread like wildfire.
But Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements Malusi Booi was quick to debunk these speculations and took to social media to say, “Film industry is shooting a movie, it’s not an invasion”.
The responses continued to pour in as one person joked “Leon Schuster is that You” while another warned the City and said “Be careful it might trigger an idea of some sort [but] anyway”.
