The Western Cape Serious Violent Crime detectives have made a significant breakthrough in the murder case of Crossroads councillor Lazola Gungxe, arresting a 26-year-old suspect on Friday, 6 March 2026, reports Cape {town} Etc.
This arrest follows the tragic shooting of Gungxe, who was gunned down shortly after attending a community meeting in Nyanga on 3 February 2026. He was 48 years old at the time of his death.
Brigadier Novela Potelwa, a spokesperson for the police, confirmed the news of the arrest and noted that the investigation has been thorough since Gungxe’s untimely demise.
‘Provincial detectives have been hard at work pursuing leads as part of the investigation,’ she stated.
‘As the investigation continues, it is envisaged that it will shed light on whether the suspect could be linked to other crimes. The investigation will also determine if there were other suspects involved in the shooting incident,’
The murder of Gungxe sent shockwaves through the community, raising concerns over safety and the increasing prevalence of violent crime in the region.
A court appearance for the suspect is scheduled for Monday, 9 March 2026, at the Athlone Magistrate’s court, where further details regarding the case may emerge.
