Remember scavenger hunts? The few minutes spent investigating the garden or home, feeling like a real-life adventurer as you search for the items on your list.

The childhood joy of scavenger hunts is not only for the young. Local artist Lara Thomson is bringing life and a touch of magic to the everyday. She paints intricate artwork on rocks, then distributes them in areas across the Cape for people to find.

Her latest rock art project is in honour of SeaAna, a young lady living abroad who is feeling lonely. SeaAna’s parents contacted Thompson to help cheer their daughter up, as she’s been struggling to make friends and feels alone.

The SeaAna rocks are inspired by mermaids, seashells and other sea life. They are displayed on the Kommetjie Boardwalk Slangkop lighthouse bench for anyone to see.

“My message to SeaAna is one of hope. I place these rocks in the Cape of Storms overlooked by the lighthouse to remind us that through the storms of life and the dark times – light can be found. May SeaAna know that we send her a message of light and kindness in this world all the way from South Africa Cape Town.”

Anyone who would like a rock may take one home with them. People are also encouraged to leave a special rock for SeaAna.

Thomson’s next rock hunt is Harry Potter themed. Each rock is delicately painted to reflect the face of Harry, characters like Dobby the house elf, Ron and Hermoine, as well as the Hogwarts houses.

The hunt will be on July 4 in Tokai Forest from 10am, starting at the Ribbon Memorial. Thomson will post clues on where to find them beforehand to her Facebook event.
