In the lead-up to Black Friday the Animal Welfare Society of SA have noticed a proliferation of adverts offering pet adoption specials. Some shelters appear to have thrown caution to the wind in the hope of securing a quick deal, and this should be of great concern to all animals lovers and reputable pet adoption agencies.
A pet is for life. They are not commodities to be traded, and anyone considering acquiring a pet should avoid falling for cheap theatrics and smug advertising campaigns that make light of a very serious decision with a lifetime of commitments and consequences.
There are a few reputable animal shelters (the Animal Welfare Society of SA included) that have wisely taken advantage of this annual shopping phenomenon by, for example, discounting their senior pets or those who have been in their care for a long time.
These discounted adoptions have been centred around what is in the animal’s best interests and differ substantially from those Black Friday adoption campaigns premised on a numbers game.
These organisations (including AWS SA) have also not “cheapened” their adoption criteria making it a real win-win for everyone especially the animals. The decision to acquire a pet should never be taken lightly and reckless bargain hunting for one (or more) on Black Friday is strongly discouraged.
So before you ask “how much is that doggy in the window”, please consider the real price tag of these priceless personalities that come with a lifetime guarantee of unconditional love and responsibility.
AWS SA is expecting a keen interest in their adoption campaign and anyone wishing to find out more should please call our Animal Care Centre Supervisor Lawrence Nkotha on (021) 692 2626 or email [email protected] (No chancers please!).
