Animal Welfare Society (AWS) workers have faced a relentless wave of animal rescue calls, handling a variety of cases involving sick, injured and displaced animals over the last 48 hours, Cape {town} Etc reports.
Among the most heartbreaking incidents were two Angulate tortoises, who were mauled by off-lead dogs. Fortunately, despite suffering gnaw marks and shell cracks, both tortoises were not seriously injured internally and were released back into a safe location after receiving necessary care.
However, the team was also faced with the tragic death of an animal victim of gun violence – the first such case of the holiday season.
Despite extensive efforts to save the animal, it succumbed to its injuries. Animal welfare groups are bracing for more incidents, as the holiday season often sees a rise in gunshot injuries to pets.
‘This is sadly the first, and we fear not the last, innocent victim of gun violence during the festive period,’ read a statement from the AWS.
‘We urge pet owners to keep their animals safe, as these are dangerous times for our furry friends.’
Despite the challenges, there were moments of triumph as well. A clutch of rescued Egyptian Goslings, initially found in critical condition, has defied the odds and is now recovering at a rehabilitation center.
‘These little survivors will soon be ready for release back into the wild,’ said a spokesperson for the team. ‘Their resilience is a beautiful reminder of the importance of rescue and rehabilitation work.’
The team has called on the public to continue reporting any instances of animal cruelty, neglect, or emergency situations.
‘Whether it’s an urgent medical need or witnessing animal abuse, we encourage everyone to reach out to us,’ the AWS emphasised. The public can contact the Inspectorate at 021 692 2626 during office hours or 082 601 1761 after hours.
The animal welfare community remains on high alert during this busy holiday period, dedicated to saving as many lives as possible and offering a brighter future for every animal in need.
