The City of Cape Town has appointed NCC to deploy baboon rangers from 1 to 31 December 2024 to help keep troops in their natural habitat.
With fewer rangers due to limited funding, residents and businesses are urged to manage waste responsibly and remain vigilant.
The CPBMJTT is working on transitioning to a more sustainable urban baboon programme involving communities and stakeholders.
These processes are:
- To appoint a contractor for a 12-month period, on a month-to-month basis, as an interim solution
- A partnership with a non-profit organisation that can receive grant funding from the CPBMJTT partners, as well as funding, sponsorships and donations from external sources such as affected communities, businesses and the general public as the longer term solution. It is foreseen that the NPO will perform selected operational and other tasks needed in implementing the Baboon Strategic Management Plan.
In June 2024, the CPBMJTT hosted engagements with communities from baboon-affected areas about the Cape Peninsula Baboon Strategic Management Plan (CPBSMP), its implementation, and the development of area-based solutions in cooperation with the individual communities.
Residents raised concerns about the NCC Environmental Services contract, which manages the Urban Baboon Programme and provides rangers, ending on 31 December 2024.
Over the past few months, the CPBMJTT has been exploring several options to address the upcoming bridging period.
