Female Community Work Programme (CWP) workers recently contributed to upgrading the Barrydale rugby field, demonstrating the power of collaboration and community effort, Cape {town} Etc reports.
The initiative, completed on Tuesday, 10 December, was supported by a partnership between the Karoo Art Hotel, Stormers coach John Dobson, SA Rugby Magazine’s Mark Keohane, and Cape Talk host John Maytham, raising R50 000 to transform the field, as reported by news62.co.za.
Leading the project was Conroy Williams of the Barrydale Fight Club, with local businesses lending their support. On the final day, the CWP workers distributed soil provided by Southey Transport to restore the neglected field.
Marika Bron, a CWP worker, emphasised the importance of the effort: ‘It’s a grievance in our eyes how the field looks. Even though we support different clubs, we thought it would be a good idea to help here.’
Local advocate Stefanus Nel expressed gratitude for the workers’ dedication, highlighting their impact: ‘The value women add to the community should never be underestimated. Thank you for what you do.’
This effort builds on earlier initiatives to support Barrydale’s rugby community. In August, Dobson, together with Maytham and team sponsor DHL, raised funds by auctioning tickets to the Springboks vs All Blacks match in Cape Town on 7 September. This auction generated R25 000.
Dobson further contributed by offering 2024-25 season tickets and an official kit, bolstering the fundraising efforts for Barrydale’s rugby clubs, the Flying Eagles and Stryders.
