As the COVID-19 infections continue to increase in most parts of the country, the Beer Association of South Africa (BASA) has indicated that the industry won’t survive another alcohol ban. This comes after rumours of a 4th wave in December, which could lead to alcohol being banned with immediate effect.
According to BASA, the previous bans lasted for more than 161 days and placed over 240 000 jobs at risk. BASA CEO Patricia Pillay, said the government has provided no form of funding or relief fund for the sector throughout the pandemic, IOL reports.
Pillay went on to say that the association have, in the meantime, written to the Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, requesting that no alcohol ban will be imposed as the festive period is a crucial period for the association.
