The Bellville Library, a cornerstone of educational and recreational resources for the local community, is temporarily closed as a result of cable theft, the City of Cape Town announced, Cape {town} Etc reports.
The closure took effect on 29 December 2025 and is expected to last until at least 11 January 2026 while repairs are carried out.
According to the City’s Library and Information Services, the facility is currently without an electricity supply, which has made it impossible to operate.
City officials stated, ‘Work is underway to replace the cables and render the facility safe for use,’
This unexpected disruption has drawn concern from the local community, who rely on the library for access to a variety of resources, including books, internet services, and community programmes.
The City has urged patrons to utilise nearby libraries during this temporary closure. Alternative facilities include Tygervalley, Brackenfell, Kraaifontein, Durbanville, and Parow, all of which are equipped to assist the community while Bellville undergoes its necessary repairs.
