Wine connoisseurs will definitely be excited about the recent news that more than 4 000 bottles of top-end wines owned by well-known V&A Waterfront restaurant Belthazar are going on auction on Thursday, June 10.
The lavish restaurant claims to have the world’s largest wine-by-a-the glass menu, selling more than 250 wines from vineyards across the world. The virtual auction will take place over five days via the High Street Auction app.
High Street Auctions’ director and lead auctioneer, Joff van Reenen stated during a radio interview with SAfm, that 95% of the auction are local South African wines.
“Then we also jump to Italy and France. But some of the wines are half a century old. We have a collection that very rarely comes under the hammer, and of all the connoisseurs, collectors that have come for viewing over the last couple of days have just stared in disbelief, and haven’t seen a collection like this come up for auction before, “Van Reenen said.
According to Van Reenen, the restaurant took this approach as many businesses took a hard knock during the lockdown. “The 5 000 bottles that we are going through that they are disposing of by the auction method of sale is the best, fastest and most effective route to follow. ”
“A lot of our clients are following in the same footsteps. It’s just a very clean method of disposing of assets very, very fast,” he said.
The wines on auction are mostly South African vintages, including a collection of four bottles of Nederburg Cabernet Sauvignon with vintages from 1972 to 1980, a 12-litre Ernie Els 2001 Red, 18 bottles of Kanonkop Pinotage 2007, six bottles of Hartenberg Gravel Hill 07 Shiraz and several vintage reserve Ports from the 1970s and 1980s, News 24 reported.
Cognac and vintage dessert wines are also among those getting auctioned, including a Klein Constantia bottled 1986.
How to place your bet:
- Wines connoisseurs are urged to download the app from the app store as the auction is only online.
- You have to register, obviously, as per normal Fica requirements, and pay a registration fee.
