A big catch nearly proved costly for a 41-year-old fisherman at the Steenbras River Mouth, between Gordon’s Bay and Kogel Bay on the eastern coastline of False Bay, when he fell off the rocks while trying to reel in a fish.

According to the Wilderness Search and Rescue (WSAR), teams managed to safely rescue the man after he fell from the rocks on Saturday after he lost his balance when his line broke.

“He fell backwards and tumbled approximately three metres into a broken gulley, injuring himself,” WSAR spokesperson David Nel said, adding that reports indicated the fisherman lost his balance while trying to reel in a large fish.
“He was unable to move from where he had fallen.”
Rescuers from the WSAR were immediately deployed, along with members of the Western Cape Health EMS and Air Mercy Service (AMS) rescue helicopter.
During the rescue, a small WSAR team had to be hoisted down to the patient.

Once his injuries were assessed, he was moved onto a stretcher and hoisted up to the helicopter.
Nel added that the fisherman was then flown to a nearby landing zone before being transported to the hospital by ambulance.
“We wish our him a speedy recovery, and we ask that all wilderness enthusiasts help us by sharing the emergency contact number 021 937 0300 – and share our posts and the #IAmWildernessSafe campaign,” he added.
Nel said the WSAR teams continue to be on high alert for any incidents.

It’s been a busy festive season for the rescue teams who have rescued multiple members of the public in recent weeks.
The approaching new year saw the WSAR undertaking its most challenging search of a busy festive season when a hiker was saved in the Cederberg on Wednesday, following a 17 hour ordeal.
This was one of three rescues on the day while more hikers were expected to take to the mountains of the province.
