The Bishops Diocesan College community put their money where their mouth is, or rather, their money where their feet are after competing in a 24-hour cycle challenge to help raise money for VUSA Academy, an NGO that creates social upliftment for children in the Langa community through structured sport, academic and recreational avenues.
So just how much will a day of cycling bag you? The organisation managed to raise an incredible R400 000 which has beat last year’s event by a whole R130 000! Old and current Diocesans and parents all came together to participate in the event with more than 175 people in 23 teams putting the pedal to the metal.
The event took place at the Raymond Ackerman Centre in Rondebosch on Saturday, 13 August, at 3:00pm and concluded at the same time on 14 August. Spectators had the opportunity to join in via live stream or in-person to cheer on the participants as they made it to the “finish line.”
VUSA Academy first began in 2001 as a part-time rugby programme for children in the Langa community. However, the programme has grown tremendously as greater needs were soon identified, including poor mental and physical health, homelessness, crime and family breakdowns that many youngsters face while living in South Africa’s townships.
The Academy has made it its goal to provide a safe space for these youngsters and help navigate them through these challenges.
A huge round of applause to the participants of this 24-hour cycle and for raising funds to help support underprivileged youth!
