The South Africa national rugby sevens team have claimed the 2025/26 World Rugby Sevens Series title after grinding out a narrow victory over Fiji national rugby sevens team in a tense final in New York, Cape {town} Etc reports.
South Africa’s 10-7 win in the decider capped off their campaign in dramatic fashion, ensuring they finished top of the standings with one event still remaining in the season.
The final, played at Red Bull Arena, saw the Blitzboks forced to come from behind after Fiji struck first with a converted try to take early control.
South Africa responded with intent, eventually drawing level through a moment of brilliance from Sako Makata, who produced a key try to bring his side back into the contest.
With the match finely balanced, it was experience that proved decisive late on, as Rosco Speckman crossed the line to put the Blitzboks ahead before JC Pretorius added the crucial conversion that ultimately separated the teams.
The narrow win secured both the tournament honours and the overall series title, underlining South Africa’s consistency across the season.
The Blitzboks ended the regular campaign on 78 points, finishing ahead of Argentina national rugby sevens team on 73 and Fiji on 70.
Their dominance was built on a string of strong performances, with the side reaching at least the semi-finals in six of the seven tournaments and lifting three titles along the way.
Among their standout moments was a commanding victory on home soil in Cape Town, where they thrilled local supporters by winning the tournament, as well as another title-winning run in Perth.
They also remained competitive throughout the circuit, consistently pushing deep into tournaments in Dubai, Vancouver and Hong Kong.
A key feature of their campaign was their defensive strength, with opponents often restricted to low scores in crucial knockout matches, while their attacking play combined pace and precision to unlock defences.
Head coach Philip Snyman praised the squad after the final, highlighting the effort put in across the season.
‘This group has worked incredibly hard all season. To win the series in this way, against a quality Fiji side in a final, shows the character we have built,’ he said.
He also pointed to the balance between experienced players and emerging talent as a major factor behind the team’s success under pressure.
Fiji pushed South Africa all the way in the final, having earlier beaten Ireland in the semi-finals and proving to be one of the toughest opponents throughout the campaign, including handing the Blitzboks their only pool-stage defeat of the season.
Beyond the result, the title represents a significant moment for South African rugby, reinforcing the country’s strength in the sevens format and providing momentum heading toward the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
With confidence high and consistency established, the Blitzboks’ latest triumph signals a strong foundation as they look ahead to future competitions.
