Beloved community doctor Fuad Jakoet has died of coronavirus early this morning [June 16]. The Bo-Kaap resident was admitted to hospital on June 2 with a bout of pneumonia and diagnosed with COVID-19 after subsequent tests.

Bo-Kaap residents expressed their grief, saying his death is a deep loss to the community. “He lived a life of service to all, including the poor and destitute… Please pray and meditate for his family, our Mother City and all who are suffering from this disease,” Radha Robyne Brave posted in the Facebook group Brave Recovery Warriors.

Condolences poured in as those whose paths had crossed with Jakoet commented on Facebook. “Sorry for the loss of a good family doctor for as far back as I can remember,” posted Sean Dammert. “He was a fantastic Dr, been my Dr for years!” said Ruschda Abrahams.
