Cape Town’s iconic, colour-splashed Bo-Kaap neighbourhood is getting a vibrant new entrepreneurial heart. A brand-new market is promising to boost the local economy while offering a genuine taste of the area’s rich cultural heritage.
The central promise of this new initiative, spearheaded by the City of Cape Town, is to prioritise traders and residents of the Bo-Kaap itself. Slated for the corner of Pentz Street and Yusuf Drive, the market is envisioned as more than just a shopping destination; it’s designed to become a community focal point, especially in the upcoming festive season, as highlighted by EWN.
Speaking about the City’s plans, Lance Greyling, director of economic development and investment, explained that local traders from the Bo-Kaap community will be the ones featured at the new market.
However, Greyling acknowledged that organisers might need to widen access: ‘We want really nice commodities for sale there, and we might have to broaden it to other traders, but we are certainly looking to give preference to those traders that are in fact residing in Bo-Kaap,’ he stated.

Local leaders have also weighed in, as Ebrahim Christian, who is the vice chairperson of the Bo-Kaap Ratepayers Association, told EWN that interest among traders is strong.
‘It can become a community hub if the right foodstuffs and items are being sold, and it can also, especially over the festive season, be used to bring some entertainment to the area,’ he added.
The official opening of the market is scheduled for 30 September. With Bo-Kaap traders in the spotlight, the project is expected to uplift small businesses and showcase the area’s cultural legacy.
