A 44-year-old man digging for sand found the decomposing body of a young child in an open field in the Imizamo Yethu informal settlement on Tuesday, December 22. The settlement is located in Hout Bay, and the open field is known for having sand holes.

According to a statement by the Hout Bay Community Policing Forum (Hout Bay CPF), the child was fully clothed.

“The traumatised man went to the police station to report his findings,” the CPF said. “An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.”

An inquest docket has been opened. Anyone with information on the incident is encouraged to contact Captain TP Lesch of the Hout Bay Police on 082 469 2293.
