Investigations are underway following the death of a seven-year-old boy who drowned while at Tygerberg Hospital, after he gained access to an unused pool on the property.

Western Cape police are looking into the incident that took place on Friday afternoon at approximately 6.35pm. According to Provincial Health Department spokesperson Mark van der Heever who spoke to The Daily Voice, the pool was decommissioned and closed.

Access to the area is prohibited with locked gates, ensuring no one enters the area without permission. The seven-year-old who drowned was reportedly one of three boys who managed to gain access to the unused pool area despite it being closed off.

Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene but were unable to resuscitate the boy.

An inquest docket has since been opened at the Parow Police Station, Police spokesperson Noloyiso Rwexana confirmed.
