In an unprecedented move, a City of Cape Town council sitting was forced to momentarily adjourn on Thursday morning when ANC caucus leader Banele Majingo resigned his seat and joined the DA, reports Cape {town} Etc.
Taking to his social media platforms to share the news, Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis shared part of the opposition party leader’s resignation letter.
‘After careful consideration, I have come to realise that my personal values and principles are now more aligned with those of the Democratic Alliance,’ Majingo said in the letter.
‘I am committed to their pursuit of clean governance and economic growth. I am increasingly impressed with their commitment to deliver for poor residents and the unemployed.’
Commenting on Majingo’s move, Hill-Lewis thanked Majingo for his ‘words and integrity’, dubbing the incident as ‘historic’.
Hill-Lewis also used the opportunity to extend an invitation to all the current ANC councillors, members and voters to also join the DA’ should they share Majingo’s sentiment.
Majingo was meant to lead the charge for a motion of no confidence against speaker Felicity Purchase of the DA on Thursday.
This is a developing story.
