Iran has launched missile strikes targeting US military bases in Qatar and Iraq in a retaliatory operation described by its state-affiliated Tasnim news agency as an ‘annunciation of victory’.
Sky News reports that the Iranian missiles were aimed at the al Udeid airbase in Doha and the Ain al Asad airbase in Iraq.
Footage from the community page @landpalestine on Instagram shows missiles lighting up the sky over Doha:
Military sources told Reuters that air defences were activated in Iraq, while Qatar has confirmed that its air defence system successfully intercepted incoming missiles.
According to a statement from Qatar’s Ministry of Defence, there were no casualties at the al Udeid base.
The country added that its airspace and territory remain ‘safe’, attributing the lack of injuries or deaths to ‘the vigilance of the armed forces and the precautionary measures taken’.
Qatar has also stated it reserves the right to respond directly and in line with international law.
In the United States, Sky News confirms that President Donald Trump is currently in the White House’s Situation Room with his team.
He was also present over the weekend when he ordered US strikes on Iranian nuclear sites, which are widely considered the trigger for Iran’s retaliatory action.
The White House and the Pentagon have said they are ‘closely monitoring’ the evolving situation.
This is a developing story.
