The intersection of Camps Bay Drive and Dal Road has become a focal point of concern for local residents and authorities alike, especially following the recent tragic death of a delivery driver, Cape {town} Etc reports.
In response to an escalating number of safety issues at this junction, the City of Cape Town is now investigating permanent solutions aimed at enhancing road safety.
Nicola Jowell, the councillor for Ward 54, alongside representatives from the Camps Bay Character and Development Area (CID) and the Camps Bay Community Ratepayers Association (CBCRA), recently convened with City officials to discuss potential improvements.
During the consultation, the idea of a temporary right-turn closure was floated; however, the City’s Public Participation team highlighted that any adjustments would necessitate a thorough public engagement process in accordance with municipal by-law requirements.
‘There have been concerns raised for some time on the safety of this intersection, after consultation, the City will proceed with a public participation process on a more permanent solution a dedicated right-turn lane,’ Jowell stated.
Jowell also noted that this change could significantly impact the flow of outbound traffic on Camps Bay Drive, underscoring the importance of resident involvement in the decision-making process.
Local motorists and pedestrians have expressed relief that the City is taking action, while many have lamented the need for reform following avoidable tragedies.
