A weekend outing at Hillcrest Estate quarry has transformed into a tale of daring adventure and heartfelt rescue after Sable, a two-and-a-half-year-old German Shorthaired Pointer, found himself in a precarious situation following an enthusiastic chase after dassies, Cape {town} Etc reports.
On Saturday evening, Sable’s exploration took a turn when he scrambled roughly 20 metres up an 80-metre cliff face, only to realise that descending was much more complicated than his ascent.
When Sable failed to return home alongside his owner, concern began to set in. It wasn’t long before a search began, culminating in the discovery of Sable stuck on a narrow ledge and looking rather sorry for himself.
Wilderness Search And Rescue (WSAR) spokesperson David Nel has reported that technical teams were immediately deployed. These teams consisted of highly trained specialists from WSAR and the City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Service.
‘Rescuers established a technical rope system and carefully lowered a K9 Search and Rescue Association of South Africa operator to the stranded pup, followed closely by a Fire and Rescue specialist,’ Nel explained.
The rescue effort included some light-hearted negotiations involving a strategic offering of premium WOOLWORTHS droëwors to entice Sable down from his ledge.
After securing the beloved pooch in a specialised harness, he was carefully lowered to safety, resulting in a tearful reunion with his relieved family just before 01h00 on Sunday morning.
‘A big thank you to all involved for the excellent teamwork and coordination that ensured this curious canine’s evening adventure ended safely,’ Nel added.
Subsequent updates have confirmed that Sable is now back at home where he is happily resting and choosing couch time over his cliffside escapades, much to the delight of his family.
Reports indicate that instead of returning to the quarry, Sable is preferring to engage in a game of fetch, steering clear of any further dassie-chasing.
