‘We can confirm that there is currently no negative impact on operations at both airports with air crafts arriving and departing according to schedule.’
‘Furthermore, the Airports Company South Africa (Acsa) is in constant contact with the relevant authorities to ensure that all stakeholders, including airlines and passengers, are kept up to date with the latest developments around this situation,’ Acsa said in a statement.
According to the advisory, passengers are advised to contact their airlines directly for more information.
On Friday night, 19 July 2024, aircraft operators were informed by the ATNS that all instrument-navigation flight (IF) approaches to the George, Kimberley, Mthatha, Polokwane, and Richards Bay airports had been suspended indefinitely.
Pilots could fly visual approaches in good weather, but at night or during cloudy, misty, or rainy weather, approaches were not always allowed.
The ATNS stated it would ensure an expedited maintenance review process per the standards to minimise the impact on safety and operational flight delays.
Last week, devastating storms hit various areas of Cape Town. The City’s Human Settlements Directorate has already issued over 10 000 flood kits and continues to distribute more to mitigate the impact of the heavy rainfall.
‘These kits are distributed across the metro but especially in more vulnerable areas such as informal settlements where residents have often settled in flood-prone areas or wetlands,’ said mayoral committee member for Human Settlements, Councillor Carl Pophaim.
It is reported that around 37 areas across the metro have been affected to varying degrees, including Khayelitsha, Lwandle in Strand, Nomzamo, Gugulethu, Masiphumelele, Macassar, Sir Lowry’s Pass, Mfuleni, Tafelsig, Vygieskraal, and Ocean View, among others.
