Cape Town is mourning Cape Malay food icon Cass Abrahams after comedian Marc Lottering shared news of her death on Sunday, 9 August, prompting tributes from people who knew her work and culinary legacy, Cape {town} Etc reports.
Abrahams became a familiar name through her cookbooks, cooking classes, broadcasting and work preserving Cape Malay food traditions. Her career helped bring the cuisine of Cape communities to wider audiences and placed heritage recipes at the centre of South African food culture.
Lottering paid tribute to Abrahams in a social media post, writing: ‘Rest in Peace, dear fabulous CASS ABRAHAMS. You made your mark, that’s for sure.’
His post also sent condolences to Abrahams’ family, including Rehane. Several people responding to the post recalled Abrahams’ cookbooks and collaborations.
Abrahams spoke openly about the history behind the food she championed.
The Washington Post described her as one of Africa’s renowned Cape Malay chefs. Al Jazeera previously also highlighted her role in bringing the cuisine of her community to a wider audience.
