Condé Nast Traveller has released their list of the most beautiful restaurants from around the world in 2020. South Africa, and more specifically, the Western Cape has made the list with the inclusion of the award-winning restaurant, Wolfgat.

The list includes 33 other locations which the publication considers to be the most beautiful, which are worth eating at too. Wolfgat came in at number five.

Wolfgat has made South Africa proud more than once, as it was named the ‘Restaurant of the Year’ at the inaugural World Restaurant Awards in 2019.

Just two hours out of Cape Town, the 20 seater restaurant is perched above the beach in Paternoster. Situated inside a beach cottage that is around 130 years old, the restaurant offers beautiful views out on to the sand.

Chef Kobus van der Merwe has made a name for himself and his restaurant with its foraged beach menu. While some of the ingredients are prepared well in advance, some of the items are collected daily from the surrounding area and served in simple, elegant style.

“He uses ingredients typical of the ancient diet of the nomadic Strandlopers, who combed the shores of this stark coast. Seasonal foods include bokkoms (dried fish), veldkool (flower buds) and pickled slangbessies berries. Wild oysters are whipped into a pâté with housemade fynbos-infused vermouth and foraged purslane. And for pudding, there might be crispy kelp served with sweet pear ice cream. This off-the-beaten-track spot is worth the significant detour out of the city,” said Condé Nast Traveller reviewer Jane Broughton.
