The Cape of Good Hope SPCA has strongly condemned the attack on a baboon troop in Kommetjie by local residents on the evening of Sunday, 4 August 2024.
Community members wielding sticks and pepper spray targeted the baboons as they approached the town to roost, causing significant distress and injury to the animals.

The situation escalated when animal activists, who were trying to protect the baboons, clashed with the residents. Unfortunately, one baboon affected by pepper spray became disoriented and suffered further injury from electrocution on an electric fence while trying to flee.
SPCA Inspectors arrived at the scene, rescued the injured baboon, and transported it to their Wildlife Department for emergency care.
Despite their efforts, the animal’s condition remains uncertain.

In response, the Cape SPCA has launched a comprehensive investigation and is gathering evidence to pursue a criminal case under the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962.
They are also working with CapeNature to consider additional charges under the Nature Conservation Ordinance.
Chief Inspector Jaco Pieterse issued a stern warning, ‘We call on the public to respect the law and the rights of animals. Inflicting harm on wildlife is both illegal and morally unacceptable. We will vigorously seek justice for these acts of cruelty. No one is above the law.’
