On Friday, the Chinese Consulate-General in Cape Town held celebrations in the Mother City, Cape {town} Etc reports.

The event commemorated the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China (celebrated on 1 October). It also highlighted the progress in China’s relationship with South Africa, as noted by South African National Assembly House Chairperson Cedric Frolick.

Frolick said South Africa sees China as ‘a reliable ally, a reliable friend, a reliable brother, a reliable sister’.

‘As we are recommitting ourselves to working together to build a high-quality South Africa-China relationship with a shared future, we will also carry forward the friendship, consolidate the mutual trust, expand cooperation, and enhance coordination.

‘While the two heads of state will play a leading role, it will ultimately be up to all of us to implement and to realize these noble objectives very soon.’

As reported by People’s Daily Online, Chinese consul-general in Cape Town, You Wenze, said bilateral relations achieved ‘leapfrog development’.

‘I have witnessed the acceleration of regional cooperation between local governments in China and three Cape Provinces. With the end of the pandemic, people-to-people exchanges between China and South Africa are gradually resuming,’ he said.

‘High-level Chinese delegations have been visiting Cape Town and other regions of Cape Provinces in an endless stream, promoting extensive exchanges and in-depth cooperation between the two sides in the fields of economy, trade, education, science and technology, culture and public security.’

‘I have attended various charity activities organized by [the] Chinese Community and Chinese companies in Cape Provinces.’

‘They have not only invested and started businesses here, creating a large number of job opportunities, but also have always been persistent in donating funds and goods to the communities and people in need, actively fulfilling their social responsibilities, giving back to the local communities, and enhancing China-South Africa friendship.’

Western Cape Economic Development and Tourism Department Head Jo-Ann Johnston reiterated that the Western Cape, the sister province of China’s Shandong Province, has helped strengthen the relationship between the two countries.

‘I look forward to continuing to strengthen the relationship between our two countries and the various regions on the sub-national level, so to the prosperity of China and South Africa, and (…) the longevity of our friendship as two nations.’
